We Explain Everything First
The purpose of your consultation with the doctor is to discuss your health goals and see if chiropractic is likely to help you. If it looks promising, a thorough examination will help identify the cause of your problem. Our patients appreciate that we explain everything in advance!
What We Look For
Our examination procedures are geared toward detection and correction of spinal misalignments known as "Vertebral Subluxation" (click link for more information). Because the nervous system controls every aspect of our body, the procedures we use are specifically selected to evaluate your spine and nervous system. In this way we can determine if a spinal condition may be causing your problem.
The first step of our Spine and Nervous System examination is performing a Surface EMG. This is a non-invasive test in which a highly sensitive hand-held instrument is used. The first part is to lightly roll the instrument over the spine in order to read spinal heat differences between one level of the spine to another, as well as from one side of the spine to the other. Heat is a byproduct of circulation, which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system.
In the second part the instrument detects and evaluates surface electrical impulses and measures them along the length your spine. This helps measure the effect of subluxation on the motor nerve system to help determine if subluxations may be affecting your muscle function. Together, these tests help us determine the health of your nervous system.
The next step of our examination is "Palpation," in which Dr. Sidoti checks your spine by hand. The purpose of palpation is check for evidence of subluxation and other problems that could be causing your condition. Dr. Sidoti also examines spinal position, curvatures and muscle tone as it relates to your condition and possible subluxation.
The last step, depending on your age and situation, may be spinal x-rays. X-rays give us important information including the position of the spinal bones, the quality of the spine, and any conditions that may prevent safely adjusting the spine. X-rays also tell us the relative length of time subluxations may have been involved in your spine. There are, however, many reasons why we would not take x-rays on certain patients including pregnancy, many young children, recent usable spinal x-rays, and other various situations.
What the Examination Tells Us
The results of your examination help us scientifically understand your condition and what processes may be going on in your spine. Based on this information we can make a more accurate determination of the type of adjustments that may be necessary to correct any spinal condition as well as help determine the frequency of any additional care. It also gives us a baseline for future tests so we can accurately measure your progress to see how your spine is correcting and your nervous system is functioning.
Report of Findings
After the examination Dr. Sidoti will explain all the results at your Report of Findings. Because Dr. Sidoti believes it is vitally important for each patient to fully understand all aspects of their examination results, special times are set aside when he can carefully explain any conditions found, and if necessary, a care plan outlining what is necessary to correct the problem. It is also at this report that any special instructions will be given in order to obtain the best and fastest possible results.
